The Assam government on Monday published the “complete draft” of National Register of Citizens (NRC) that saw the exclusion of names of over 40 lakh people. But has the exercise been flawless?

Amidst reports that names of many genuine Indian citizens were left out, it now emerges that the members of 39 families from Morigaon, who were either declared foreigners or their cases are being dealt with by various Foreigners’ Tribunals, made it to the list.

Morigaon Deputy Commissioner Hemen Das told InsideNe that some of these people were either declared foreigners or suspected illegal immigrants while the cases of some were being heard by the Foreigners’ Tribunals.

“They are all scattered. There are altogether 39 families with a population of about 200. I am dealing with their cases so that people don’t lose their faith in the system,” Das said. He assured that the names would be deleted. As such, he said nobody should raise any objection.

“We have a system in place and it detected them. The detection was not based on any complaint. No objection was lodged by any,” he added.
