Police arrests BTC council member for allegedly raping minor girl

Guwahati, April 26, 2019:

The Guwahati Police on Friday arrested a self-styled ‘Babaji’ for allegedly raping and impregnating a minor girl at Patharkuwari in Guwahati under pretext of performing prayers saying the girl is under possession of evil spirit. The police have announced to undergo a DNA test of the accused babaji.

The accused identified as Ghanshyam Das is a member of the BTC council.

As per reports, the family called Das last year to perform some ritual at their house. Taking advantage of this he claimed that their 16-year-old maid was ‘possessed by spirits’ and advised that she needs to attend a ‘hawan’ to cure the possession.

In the name of performing the ritual in a separate room Das repeatedly raped her and fled.

The incident to notice when she felt ill and was taken to a private hospital, the authorities revealed that the she was pregnant and later gave birth to a baby.

The family lodged a complaint with the Satgaon police. The crime was first reported by 181 women helpline to Miguel Queah, Support Person (POCSO), Child Welfare Committee Kamrup (M) and Executive Director of UTSAH, an NGO working for child rights.
