Guwahati, October 11, 2018:

The police on Thursday submitted the charge-sheet on the rape & murder case that took place on the Avadh Assam Express in July.

The charge-sheet said, "Mariani GRPS Case No 14/18 U/S 302/376 IPC was registered on 11.07.2018 on the basis of a complaint lodged by complainant ASI Jitu Mipun of Mariani GRPS after recovery of a female dead body in the differently abled Coach No. SLR (D) No. NF 03707 of 15909 Down Avadh Assam Express while the train was standing at Platform No-1 of Mariani Railway Station." [sic]

It added that later on, the deceased was identified as Lalima Devi, 48 years by her son Jitendra Kumar Singh.

The charge-sheet added, "She was raped and killed while she was proceeding from Dibrugarh (Banipur) Railway Station towards Gopalganj, Bihar by 15909 Down Avadh Assam Express Train."

During investigation of the case, SI Biren Kalita, OC of Mariani GRPS arrested accused Bikash Das and Bipin Pandey after getting sufficient evidences against them.

On case was later re-registered as Tinsukia GRPS Case No. 23/2018 U/S 302/376/34 of the IPC on being transferred from Simaluguri GRPS as the place of occurrence of the crime falls under Tinsukia GRPS jurisdiction.

After registering the case Sub Inspector Sakan Ram Boro of Tinsukia GRPS, took up the investigation of the case and submitted Charge Sheet against both the arrested accused persons.

Prior to this incident, both the accused were found to be involved in rape and murder of a student of Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat namely Radha Kumar inside the Down Tinsukia - Rangia Express passengers train. The dead body was recovered at Simaluguri Railway Station.

In connection with the incident, Simaluguri GRPS case no 06/2018 under section 302/376/34 of the IPC was registered and charge sheet of the case has already been submitted against both the accused person. At present the case is in trial stage.
