Pradip Dutta Roy calls Assamese students in Assam University ‘Barak’s Enemy’

Introduction of the most controversial Citizenship (Amendment), 2016 Bill is not the only factor that has created a rift in the Brahmaputra and Barak valley of Assam. Few intellectuals with an aim to fulfil their political propagandas have started to create a rift between the two valleys.

At the time when indigenous people living in Barak valley of Assam are equally protesting against the Bill in fear of losing their indigenous identity, the provocating statement of former All Cachar Karimganj Hailakandi Students’ Association (ACKHSA) President Pradip Dutta Roy against the indigenous students of Assam studying in Assam University in Silchar has shaken the entire identity of the state.

In his statement, Roy said, “Few Khilonjiya (indigenous) students have protested against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 in the Assam University where I have protested for ten years under ACKSHA. Despite of opposing AASU and AGP, the university was snatched away from us. The Assamese students union protesting this Bill within this university is highly criticisable, they are Barak’s enemy. I have approached the Vice- Chancellor of the university to take action against those students, who have protested against this Bill. I don’t know what role the Vice-Chancellor played yesterday. I warn the Assamese students that you come to study so do your work, don’t try to poke into the politics or else I will be force to prohibit Assamese student from getting admission in this university.”

These statements of the former student leader with an aim to create rift between the students in the University has threaten the unity between people of Brahmaputra and Barak valley. This act has been highly criticized by all the learned people of Assam.

Speaking to InsideNE, senior journalist from Silchar, Dilip Singh said that the statements coming out from such people are not acceptable and this will divert the mindset of the upcoming generations. He added, “These self-claimed leaders of the Barak valley who have misused the name of Bengali is doing this only to come into limelight. Barak is not only for the Bengalis, it is for Assamese, Mizo, Hmar, Kuki, Naga, and many other communities. They need to study the Barak. When many people listed in D-voter’s committed suicide in Barak, these people never raised their voice in support of the victim’s family. Such people are destroying the relation between the two valleys.”

He added, “The indigenous people of Barak are equally protesting, some has burnt effigies of MP Susmita Dev and few have announced to take weapons in their hands. No one is willing to accept illegal migrants as citizens here.”

It may be mentioned that FIR has been lodged against Pradip Dutta Roy by Durnitibirudhi Oikya Mancha at Golaghat police station.
