Senior Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leader and former Chief Minister of Assam, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta on Wednesday said that he is totally unaware of the decision of the AGP leaders coming into an alliance with the Bharatiya janata Party (BJP). “I have come to know about the alliance only through media,” he said.
Speaking to media, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said, “The AGP had decided that if needed, the AGP, sticking to its ideology of regionalism, will contest the Lok Sabha elections alone. But I am totally unaware of the decision taken by the Party leader yesterday. I believe that for the sake of the people of Assam, they should undertake discussions in multiple phases. Such decisions should be taken based on general house discussions, but they (AGP leaders) have discussed within themselves and I came to know about it from the media. “
“The alliance was broken for many reasons, one of which was that Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 2016 elections, promised that by May 16 all the Bangladeshis will be sent back which did not happen. They then brought up the issue of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, violating the Assam Accord,” he added.
Claiming that the news of the appointment of Prafulla Kumar Mahanta as the new Governor of Mizoram is a ‘political conspiracy’, the former Chief Minister said he is not aware of it and also said that his name is been misused during every election.
