BJP MLA Shiladitya Dev expressed his happiness at the resumption of the alliance between the saffron party and Assam’s biggest regional party, the AGP. Dev has thanked the AGP for inadvertently ‘supporting’ the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill by rejoining the BJP, the progenitors of the Bill.
Dev also made a surprising request to former Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Mahanta. “I am happy for this alliance because two-time Chief Minister Prafulla Mahanta, who is most popular among Bangladeshi Muslims, is back in the fold. Since Bangladeshi Muslims love him so much, I want to request him to contest the election from either Dhubri or Barpeta. He will win those seats 100%. Whenever journalists have asked me about election prospects, I always tell them that we might lose two seats, Dhubri and Barpeta, because of illegal Bangladeshi influx. But now that AGP is back, we can now win Barpeta and Dhubri too, thanks to the popularity of Prafulla Mahanta among Bangladeshi Muslims.”
