GUWAHATI: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politician Biswajit Daimary has said that he is likely to file his nomination papers for the vacant Rajya Sabha seat. Daimary collected nomination papers from the Returning Officer on Thursday.

 

Daimary said that even though the BJP has not officially named any candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections, he has been asked to arrange necessary papers and documents to file nominations.

 

Daimary says that he is likely to file his nomination papers on Monday next.

 

It needs mention here that Returning Officer and Additional Secretary of Assam Legislative Assembly Dulal Pegu on Thursday issued the notification for the ensuing Rajya Sabha election.

 

The election will be held to fill up a vacant seat for the Upper House from Assam. Incidentally, the seat was vacated by Daimary himself, who switched from the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) to the BJP ahead of the polls in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC).

As per the notification, the last date for the filing of nominations is February 18.

 

The scrutiny of the nomination papers will be done on February 19.

 

The last date for withdrawal of candidature is February 22.

 

Polls will be held from 9 am to 4 pm on March 1.

 

The counting of votes will be after 5 pm on the same day.

 

The term of the to be elected RS member from Assam will be up to April 9, 2026.

 

The 60-member Assam Assembly has 118 legislators – 60 of the BJP, followed by 19 from the Congress, 14 from the AIUDF (All India United Democratic Front), 13 from the AGP (Asom Gana Parishad), 11 from the BPF, and one Independent member.
