GUWAHATI: Rakibul Hussain, one of the foremost Congress leaders from Assam, has termed a recent audio clip in which he had supposedly opposed an alliance with the All India United Democratic Alliance (AIUDF) as "fake."
In a clip that has been circulated by a prominent television channel, a voice resembling Hussain's can be heard expressing opposition to the Congress' alliance with the AIUDF party.
In an exclusive interaction with Inside NE, Hussain clarified, "I am peeved since it is not my voice. Therefore, I find it extremely objectionable. Moreover, the voice that is supposed to be mine is addressing someone as 'Sir'. The only persons I have addressed as 'Sir' are former CMs Tarun Gogoi and Hiteshwar Saikia."
Hussain further stated that the "credibility" of the news channel will be destroyed if the voice in the viral clip is examined.
"I have every right to either support the alliance or oppose it behind closed doors. However, there is no need to cook up a controversy over this," Hussain further stated.
Congress and Badruddin Ajmal-led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) have joined hands to offer an alternative to the ruling BJP in the state.
Congress and the AIUDF, along with four other political parties, declared the formation of a 'Grand Alliance' on Tuesday.
In a joint press conference held in Guwahati, the leaders of Congress, AIUDF, CPI, CPI (M), CPI (ML) and Anchalik Gana Morcha said all six political parties have decided to form a 'Grand Alliance' for the greater interest of the people of the state and to "save Assam".
