Ranjan Gogoi set to be next CJI

Guwahati (Assam), Sept 1, 2018:

Assam’s proud son, Justice Ranjan Gogoi, is set to be the next Chief Justice of India (CJI). No Assamese had ever donned the CJI’s mantle.

Speculations are rife that the incumbent CJI, Justice Dipak Misra, will endorse the name of Justice Gogoi, the second senior-most judge in the Supreme Court, as his successor, keeping with tradition. Gogoi is likely to take charge on October 3.

There was a question mark on whether Justice Misra will endorse the name of Justice Gogoi given the unprecedented press conference which he and three other Supreme Court judges had convened against the CJI in January this year.

Sources said the formal announcement of Justice Gogoi's name could be made when Justice Misra replies to a letter of the Law Ministry. Justice Misra will retire on October 2 next.
