With the increase of 400 Foreigner Tribunals (FT) that will be set up in the state, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has relaxed the recruitment norms for members of the FTs in Assam.
A total of 500 FTs will be available in the state once all the 400 tribunals are set up.
As per the new recruitment standards, any retired IAS or ACS officer whose rank was that of Additional Secretary or above will be eligible for applying for the posts of the FT members.
The advocates who have completed a service period of seven years will also be eligible for recruitment. Earlier, only for only retired judges or advocates with more than 10 years experience was eligible.
A special committee of the Gauhati High Court monitors the selection process of the FT. Whereas, the Home and Political Department of Assam government makes the appointment to these posts.
It is to be noted that out of the presently available 100 FTs, 36 are permanent FTs and 64 additional ones which were set up as directed by the Gauhati High Court.
As per reports, over two lakh cases are pending with them. The proposal for the additional 1,000 FTs was proposed from the Dispur to dispose of the large number of cases of suspected foreigners in the post-NRC period.
The 400 approved FTs will be set up by August/September this year, and the remaining 200 by the year-end or early 2020.
