Reserved EVM with no vote polled found in Hailakandi counting centre in Assam

HAILAKANDI: An electronic voting machine (EVM) was found at a counting centre in Hailakandi district of Assam yesterday.

The district election officers soon rushed to the spot, where the EVM was found, and made an inquiry into it.

After a detailed investigation, it was found that the EVM inside a trunk, that found its way to the counting centre was unused and a reserved one and there was no vote polled.

The EVM was taken immediately to the EVM warehouse adjacent to the deputy commissioner's office premises.

The district election officer later said that the reserved EVM was found in one of the trunks which have been brought to the counting centre for keeping the polled EVMs after counting takes place today.

The contesting candidates, who too rushed to the counting centre, were satisfied that the EVM was a reserved EVM and no vote was polled.

Meanwhile, counting of votes for the 126-member Assam assembly election is under way with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leading in 21 seats, followed by the Congress-led ‘Mahajot’ in 12, Lurinjyoti Gogoi-led Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) in two and jailed peasant leader Akhil Gogoi-led Raijor Dal in two.
