Retired Supreme Court judge Sailendra Nath Phukan passed away on Sunday after a prolonged illness. He was 81.
Phukan, who hailed from Jorhat, began his career as a lawyer in 1962 and was appointed as a judge of the Gauhati High Court in 1985. He also served as a judge in Himachal Pradesh and Odisha high courts. He retired as a judge of the Supreme Court in 2002.
His last rites will be performed with state honours. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who mourned the demise, passed an instruction to this effect to chief secretary Alok Kumar.
