GUWAHATI: The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), that lost narrowly to the BJP-Janata Dal (United) alliance in the Bihar elections last year, will contest a few seats in Assam assembly elections.

This was stated by RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav here today adding that the party would make the foray in alliance with “like-minded” parties.

Yadav was here since last evening holding discussions with parties not allied with the ruling BJP. After holding talks with the Congress, Yadav was scheduled to hold a discussion All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). The Congress and AIUDF have formed an alliance with four other left parties.

This was Yadav’s first visit to Assam that will go to polls on March 27, April 1 and 6.

“We are holding discussions with like-minded parties,” he said.

Yadav said the RJD was also in touch with other smaller parties in Assam.

“About five per cent Hindi-speaking population from Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha and Chhattisgarh live in Assam. We have a sizeable number of such people in 11 assembly seats. But, we’ll contest only where chances of winning are high,” Yadav said.

Yadav also indicated that he would travel to other poll-bound states and Union Territories -- West Bengal, Puducherry and Kerala to take part campaign against the BJP and its allies.
