The Supreme Court (SC) that heard the last hearing on the National Register of Citizen (NRC) on Thursday asserted that the publication of NRC has been finalized as per the scheduled date of August 31.
The Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi said, “We will not be bothered by what others say about our orders and judgments. We will continue to oversee NRC finalized as per the scheduled date of August 31.”
The bench also mentioned, “Under no circumstances should the publication of the final NRC be stretched beyond August 31.”
However, the SC has reserved the order on the citizenship status of the people born in India between 1971 and 1987 and who were not included in the NRC list.
Directing NRC State Coordinator Prateek Hajela to ignore all the criticism made on the floor of Assam Vidhan Sabha over the NRC process, the bench further said, “Anything said in the assembly is beyond the purview of judicial review. It’s as simple as that.”
