Schools in Assam are unlikely to reopen before December this year. This was stated by Assam education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday. Addressing a meeting in Sootea in Biswanath district, Sarma said that schools both government as well as private will not reopen before December 2020 in the wake of rising cases of COVID-19.
Earlier, the Assam government had ordered reopening of schools from September 21 for classes 9, 10, 11 and 12 students with written permission from their guardians.
Education minister Sarma said that schools will be reopened informally from September 21. The students of 9, 10, 11 and 12 standards will attend schools with written permission from their parents. There will be 50 per cent attendance of the teachers.

Sarma stated that COVID-19 testing will be done for students and teachers. Deputy commissioner (DC) were suppose to take further decisions if a large number of cases are detected from a particular school.
Meanwhile, Assam registered 3590 COVID cases out of the 148780 samples tested in the last 24 hours. The positivity rate of the state now stands at 2.41 percent. The total cases in the state now stand at 180811 with 36112 active cases. On Wednesday, 17 patients succumbed to the disease. The state witnessed 1616 recoveries taking the total to 145615.
