Dispur, January 13, 2019:

Staging a sit-in protest at the state capital Dispur, members of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP) on Monday demanded the Government to immediately roll back the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act, and implement Inner Line Permit (ILP) in order to safeguard the interests of the indigenous people of Assam.

The student body that has been playing an active role against the CAA, has staged the protest with two main demands: the passing of a resolution in the Assam Assembly opposing the CAA, and the adoption of a resolution to extend ILP to Meghalaya.

Notably, the Meghalaya Assembly has also adopted a unanimous resolution to urge the Centre to implement ILP in Meghalaya, the resolution is yet to see the light of day. The resolution was adopted in a special session of the Assembly held on December 19.

AJYCP leader, Palash Changmai, talking to Inside Northeast, addressing the gathering, stated, "We want the Assam Assembly to resolve to demand that the CAA be withdrawn. Just like the other States have Inner Line Permit (ILP), the Assam Assembly should also pass a resolution to adopt an ILP in the State."

It may be mentioned here that the passage of the CAA by the Rajya Sabha has sparked nationwide protests as the people fear that the legislation, that seeks to provide citizenship to foreigners, could erode the language, culture, and identity of the indigenous communities.
