The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has launched a country-wide campaign on the issue of updation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam with a day-long protest demonstration at Parliament Street in New Delhi.
Addressing a crowd, SDBI president MK Faizy said the draft NRC, published on July 30, had pushed the Bengali-speaking people into a deep trouble. He said there were thousands of cases where people were left out of the draft even after they had submitted all documents and records to NRC authorities.
As they have been excluded, there is now a threat from the government that following reconsideration, they would be treated as foreigners and deported from the country or kept in detention centres, Faizy said.
The SDPI would organise similar programmes in the coming days in state capitals where the party has its presence.
