GUWAHATI: Senior citizens looking for work opportunities will be able to apply for jobs by registering for the first-of-its-kind online employment exchange dedicated to senior citizens from October 1.

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment’s (MoSJ&E’s) Senior Able Citizens for Re-Employment in Dignity (SACRED) will enable those above 60 years of age to search for jobs on the virtual platform.

In an official statement, Social Justice and empowerment secretary R Subrahmanyam said the platform will bring together various stakeholders for giving work opportunities to the elderly.

To increase employment opportunities for senior citizens, the ministry has written to various industry associations, including the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), and the Association of Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham).

Those over the age of 60 will be able to register and provide information such as education, experience, skills, and areas of interest.

Recruiters will post jobs or projects, as well as specifications and criteria for those interested in applying.

The ministry, however, clarified that the portal will not guarantee jobs but will serve as a resource for those looking for work.

The portal will support various work models such as full-time, part-time, freelance, and pro bono.

If necessary, the portal could include options for senior citizens to be retained and re-skilled.
