Assam Health & Family Welfare, Finance and Education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that many Congress leaders would join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) before 2021 assembly elections.

Sarma said that Lakhipur MLA Rajdeep Goala who had recently been expelled from the congress would join the BJP. Sarma said several tribal leaders will also join the the BJP in the days to come.

Former MLA Rumi Nath who has been expelled from the congress is on Saturday hinted toward joining the saffron party too.

Earlier, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ripun Bora appealed the regional parties to forge an alliance with the congress. Bora said that several Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders will join Congress soon.

Bora also urged Bodoland Peoples’s Front chief Hagrama Mohilary to join Congress. He added that the latter was in talks with the former.

Bora also informed that talks regarding alliance with Raijor Dal and Assam Jatiya Parishad are going on.

Earlier, Bora had said that the congress would play the role of big brother in the grand alliance it is forging with All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and other anti-BJP parties. He also stated that the chief minister would be from the Congress.

He said despite the grand alliance, the congress would like to clarify that the party will remain the big brother. There is no ambiguity in the fact that the chief minister must be from the Congress. Since the Congress will be the largest party, therefore the CM will be from the congress. Bora also stated that he is ready to become the chief minister if the high command allows him.

On the other hand, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Maulana Badruddin Ajmal after meeting former Assam chief minister at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) said that Congress-AIUDF alliance has been confirmed. Though the two parties have been urging for a grand alliance, no other parties have come forward to join hands with the Congress and AIUDF to fight against BJP.
