Former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student and Shaheen Bagh-famed agitator Sharjeel Imam has been sent to four days crime branch custody.
The Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court, where he was produced on Thursday, has sent him to four days custody. The Crime branch, however had sought fourteen days custody of Imam for interrogation.
It may be mentioned here that Sharjeel has been slapped with sedition charges for making "provocative" statements against Assam and northeastern states.
The Shaheen Bagh leader had made a statement about separating Assam and other northeastern states from India for the betterment of the region. “Not permanently, but temporarily we can certainly block the chicken’s neck for a few days,” Sharjeel said while addressing a gathering in Delhi.

Soon after the video went viral, Sharjeel Imam attracted the ire of majority of the people in the Northeastern region. Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur state governments had filed cases against Sharjeel Imam for his statement, which according to authorities, were against the interest of the nation.
Upon arrival in Guwahati, Sharjeel was greeted with slogans raised by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members.
