Guwahati, February 28, 2020:

Sharjeel Imam, the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) scholar who sparked controversy by saying that Assam and the Northeast must be "cut off" from the rest of India at a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, was produced at the CJM Court in Assam's Guwahati and has been sent to Judicial Custody.

However, the situation turned chaotic after a horde of protesters came to the front of the Court to launch a protest against the JNU scholar. Chants such as "Sharjeel Imam ko goli maaro" (shoot Sharjeel Imam) and the evergreen "desh ke gaddaron ko goli maaro saalo ko" (shoot the traitors of the country" rang clear and the the agitators confronted Imam.

It may be recalled that when Imam was brought to Assam, protesters greeted him at the Railway Station in Guwahati, and some even tried to attack him. However, the wall of security ensured that the attackers were unable to reach Imam.

Others have, at the same time, alleged a nexus between Imam and intellectuals and mediapersons.

It may be mentioned here that Imam was booked under Sections 121 A, 124 A, 153 A, B, read with Section 13 (1) of IPC and 15 A (iii), 18 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act following his controversial statement.
