The Karbi Students' Hostel, located in the heart of Meghalaya capital Shillong, was built in undivided Assam in 1958 and still serves as a haven for the Karbi students in Shillong. However, the historic site will be demolished soon.

Informing this, NEFIP VP Bikram Hanse said, " The Karbi Students Hostel will be demolished soon to build new Karbi Bhawan, instead of Karbi Boys Hostel. Now, students were served notice to vacate the hostel, but the KAAC has not made any specific provisions for the students to stay till now."

"The KAAC laid a foundation stone there in 2015, and they want to demolish the building. It is a monument, as it is more than 50 years old. They should preserve that building. It will be demolished from next week, and students have been asked to vacate", Hanse informed.

Hanse further stated that the KAAC should have preserved the old building to maintain the legacy of the historic site. "They have even demolished the Oldest Sixth schedule Autonomous Council building, the Member Hostel for the Executive Member of KAAC were recently demolished, and new buildings have been erected in their stead", Hanse said.
The NEFIP further urged that KAAC CEM, Tuliram Ronghang, to arrange alternative staying facilities for the Karbi Students who are residing in the hostel at present.
