Silchar MP Sushmita Dev shown black flags by Citizenship Bill protestors

Guwahati, January 20, 2019:

Silchar Constituency Lok Sabha representative Sushmita Dev was shown black flags by protestors of the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2018 while she was on her way to attend a meeting.

“Make you stand clear on the issue. We don’t want the amendment of this Bill”, said a protestor, addressing the MP.

Black flags were waved at the MP at Madhurband in Assam’s Cachar district.

It is to be mentioned that despite staunch opposition the Bill in Brahmaputra valley, Barak’s Sushmita has not voiced her opposition to the Bill and has, in fact, voiced support for it.

In a letter to Joint Parliamentary Committee chairperson Rajendra Agarwal, she urged the chairperson to grant unconditional citizenship to all people of Indian origin who entered before 2014.

Security measures have been beefed up in the area in view of the protests.
