Nagaon (Assam), September 21, 2018:

At least six people died on Friday after they came into contact with a 11,000 volt high tensile (HT) line in Nagaon’s Juria.

Sources said the incident took place early in the morning when the victims had gone to a pond for fishing. Tragedy had struck them as a snapped HT line was lying in the pond from before.

Six of the victims died on the spot while at least eight others were injured. They have been hospitalised. The deceased have been identified as Rafikul Islam, Jabbar Ali, Mainul Islam, Habibur Rahman, Inamul Islam and Ashikul Islam.

The locals alleged that the incident took place due to the negligence of Power Department.

An irate mob later vandalized the house of an official of Power Department. He is said to be a line man.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal directed Power Minister Tapan Gogoi to rush to the spot and take stock of the situation.

Meanwhile, police and CRPF personnel have been deployed to the area to maintain law and order.
