An alluring development for the rich wildlife of the Northeast as six new species of lizards and kinds of bent-toed geckos from different parts of the region were found as a remarkable discovery from a team of few scientists.

In the reviewed taxonomic mega- journal, Zootaxa, a publish of New Zealand, the description of these newly discovered species has been published.

According to report in Zootaxa, these bent-toed geckos of the genus Cyrtodactylus are the most species-rich genus of geckos globally with over 250 species.

Going through the research, spokesperson of the team Ishan Agarwal and including Varad B Giri, R Chaitanya, Stephen Mahony of Natural History Museum, London and global authority on geckos, and Aaron Bauer of Villanova University, United States stated that the new Indian species of lizards are named after the Assam capital, Guwahati, as Cyrtodactylus Guwahatiensis, also called the Guwahati bent-toed gecko and being the fifth lizard to be described from a major Indian city.

Followed up by the other species of lizards are named after Nagaland as Cyrtodactylus Nagalandensis, Cyrtodactylus Kazirangaensis famed after Kaziranga National Park, and the largest bent-toed gecko is named as Cyrtodactylus Jaintiaensis after the Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya.

The report further concludes with the other two species named after the Jampui Hills of Tripura as Cyrtodactylus Montanus and the last one is named as Cyrtodactylus Septentrionalis of the Abhayapuri bent-toed gecko.
