Following the recent updates of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), Assam continues to reel under the controversial proposed implementation of Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 which in all likelihood is expected to have adverse effect on the Assam Accord and threatens the very identity of Asomiya people in the state.
At this time of urgency and need of unity among the people of Assam, regional political leaders have gone all out with their dual stand on the Bill thus creating chaos and panic among the people. While Assam’s “Biggest Regional Party”- Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and their leaders are at loggerheads on the issue, President of India Mahila Congress and Silchar MP Sushmita Dev added another twist to the whole episode.
Speaking to our InsideNE chief, Dev said that the Bill will have no impact on Assam since the Assam Accord states citizenship to people who have immigrated to the state before March 25, 1971 while the bill allows citizenship to the people coming before December 31, 2014.
When further asked to clarify her stand on the Bill, she refused to comment on it citing it as a confidential matter. She further pushed on the matter to the ruling BJP party and asked PM Modi to answer this question that the people of the state have been eagerly waiting for months now.
It is evident that Dev have always been vocal about the Bill and have wholeheartedly supported its implementation. And at this time, the statement of this stature from a senior Congress leader only proves what stand political parties are taking over the issue and the healing touch they’re providing to the immense pain for Asomiya people named “Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016”.
