Guwahati, January 8, 2019:

Speaking about the threat to the Assamese jati amid silence from the Jatiya Nayak Sarbananda Sonowal former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said: “His true nature has been revealed. He is not a ‘Jatiya Nayak’. He is power hungry and has forgotten his promises to the people after assuming a position of power.”

Gogoi also alleged that the Chief Minister gave the people ‘jumlas’ regarding jati, mati, bheti. “We have seen his support for the Bill at the rally in Silchar. And in Brahmaputra valley, he says he will protect the interests of the indigenous people. He has been exposed as a hypocrite. Once a hero, he has been given a villain status by the same AASU who had conferred the title of ‘Jatiya Nayak’ on him, said Gogoi.

Talking about the bandh, Gogoi said that protests today have shown that they consider it a last stand to preserve Assam’s identity.

Reminiscing about his the days of his reign as CM, Gogoi said that the Congress government had brought the state to a situation of stability. Gogoi alleged that the BJP government is pushing Assam towards a state of unrest by disregarding the voice of the people with their dictatorial leadership.

Speaking about the breaking of the alliance between the BJP and AGP, Gogoi commended the AGP on their move to part ways with the BJP government.

Speaking about the issue of a sovereign Assam that has been raised by many leaders such as KMSS Akhil Gogoi, the former Chief Minister said: “I am against the notion of a separate Assam. Our problems cannot be resolved by a sovereign Assam. We must achieve our rights within the India through unity.

“The Congress have opposed this Bill. No party has supported the Bill fully. I doubt that this Bill will be passed tomorrow”, said Gogoi, talking about the possibility of the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 being passed in Parliament tomorrow.
