The Goalpara Police arrested a high school teacher from Lakhipur for criticizing the Narendra Modi government at the Centre on the social media.
Speaking to InsideNE, Goalpara Superintendent of Police Amitava Sinha said the police detained the teacher, Abu Taleb, for his alleged derogatory remarks about the PM. He was detained based on a complaint filed by some BJP workers.
The police brought Taleb to a police station for interrogation over the social media post. However, the locals condemned the act. They claimed that the government was “oppressing” the people by taking away the freedom of speech.
Some claimed that Taleb's detention was a cruel act and a clear example of dictatorship in the state. They described his detention as the murder of democracy.
“It seems that if someone opposes or criticizes the government, he or she will be arrested and put behind the bars,” a local said.
