Tears Dried Up But Abhi-Neel’s Families Wait For Justice

The dastardly attack on the two young artists of Assam “Abhi-Neel” has been remembered by all the people. The Dokmoka lynching case is about to complete one year by now.

Today, the families of both the youths, Abhijit Nath and Nilotpal Das, have performed the rituals of one year death anniversary as per the Assamese calendar.

Speaking to Inside North East, Nilotpal’s father, Gopal Chandra Das said that the incident has left the family into deep darkness as they have lost their younger son. Das added, “We are bearing an unbearable pain in our heart. I would like to say that such an incident should not happen to any other people in the society and let this be the last sorrowful event in society.”

Das mentioned that the people should come together along with the government institutions to put an end to such evil-minded thought.

Nilotpal’s father said that the case has been going on in the session court of Nagaon and defense lawyer has appealed for bail for the accused. But he feared that if the accused gets the bail, his son may not get justice just like the case of Jhankar Saikia who was lynched five years ago. He also stated that the High Court has ordered for fast track trial of the case but it did not order any fast track proceeding of the court.

“If the High Court desires, the pace of the case can gain momentum,” he added.

Abhijit Nath and Nilotpal Das, who went to the Karbi Anglong district to witness the scenic beauty of the state was lynched on June 8, 2018, by a group of a mob who attacked them suspecting to be child lifters. They were lynched at Panjuri Kacharigaon village under Dokmoka Police Station.

The police had arrested 48 people under various Sections of the Indian Penal Code in connection with the "Abhi-Neel" lynching case. An 844-page charge-sheet was filed in a court of Diphu on September 1, 2018.
