Telengana teenager gives dignified farewell to unclaimed bodies of COVID victims

BENGALURU: While bodies of patients who died of COVID-19 were transported in a garbage van in Chhattisgarh, a 16-year-old girl in Telengana along with two other females, has taken up the task to perform respectful cremation of unclaimed bodies.

The girl, identified as Devishree who is associated with Annam Seva Foundation, worked tirelessly to ensure that unclaimed bodies are not simply disposed of, but that their last rites are properly performed.

Previously, the NGO assisted in the cremation of unattended bodies, particularly those found on railway tracks and crushed and mutilated by trains.

However, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the NGO is also helping in the cremation of COVID infected deceased.

Generally, the NGO receives information about unattended or unclaimed bodies from the police. Following this, they rush to the location to perform the last rites.

Devishree is also studying Intermediate. She is doing the job with two other female colleagues of the NGO.

Her parents have a small stall in the nearby Yellandu area. However, now it remains closed due to the lockdown, and her parents too are currently working as cooks in the foundation.
