Tension escalated along Assam-Mizoram northwestern border today following the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (Mizo Students’ Association)’s attempt to construct a resting shed on what they claimed to be the territory of Mizoram. Several student activists were injured from the lathi-charge of Assam police in their bid to foil the student activists’ plan to construct the shed.
About a hundred of MZP activists from Aizawl and Bairabi went to Zophai paddy field, belonging the late chief minister of Mizoram Ch Chhunga, to construct the rest house this morning. They confronted about 500 personnel of Assam police and para-military forces who were guarding the area and dismantling every new post the students built.
It may be mentioned that the MZP had on February 28 built a resting shed on the same spot with permission obtained from Ch Chhunga’s widow.
