After Indian President Ram Nath Kovind expressed the desire of the current administration to pass the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 in the Rajya Sabha today, North East Students Organization (NESO) advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya has urged the opposition to oppose the Bill in the Parliamentary session.
Speaking to InsideNE, Bhattacharya said that the student body has been in continuous contact with the opposition members and was assured that they would oppose it. Samujjal Bhattacharya said, “The President’s speech has proved that government is trying to pass the Bill in the Parliament. So now it is the duty of the Congress party and the other opposition parties to oppose the Bill. It is the responsibility of the UPA and the NDA allies to oppose this Bill. They must oppose it not just theoretically but practically by attending the Rajya Sabha session and opposing it.”
“The BJP passed the Bill in the Lok Sabha as they were the majority but in Rajya Sabha, they don’t have the majority. The majority now is Congress, UPA allies and NDA allies including JD(U) and other allies who have been opposing it. So now everyone should stand united and vote not to pass the Bill or else the BJP will pass it in the Parliament. If they have a commitment towards the North Eastern states, they must stop this Bill from getting passed,” he further added.
It may be mentioned that the Bill has been passed in the Lok Sabha and is in the list to be tabled in the ongoing Rajya Sabha session.
