MARIGAON: Congress workers in Middle Assam's Morigaon district are up in arms after a candidate in the forthcoming Tiwa Autonomous Council polls missed the deadline to file nomination papers after her husband -- who had the files -- was arrested while they were on their way to file papers.

According to reports, the Tiwa Autonomous Council Congress candidate who was slated to contest the Tiwa Autonomous Council election from the 14 no. Gobha Constituency could not file her nomination papers her husband was arrested along with her nomination papers by the local authorities.

The candidate, Kankana Bordoloi Pator, has cried foul after her husband, who was in possession of the all-important documents.

The workers of the Congress party are now demanding that the candidate, who was unjustly deprived of filing the papers, be allowed to contest the elections.

"The nomination papers were with the husband and he was suddenly picked up by the police. The candidate had gone to the bathroom and when she returned, he was gone. The in-charge of the Marigaon Police Station later handed him over to the in-charge of the Jagiroad Police station in-charge. It seems like the BJP is afraid of democracy as people have discovered their true colours and their defeat is certain. Therefore, they have staged a drama by using the local police," said a Congress worker who took part in today's protest.

Meanwhile, another Congress worker alleged that the Morigaon OC is working as an "agent" of the ruling BJP party and demanded him to release the arrested man.

Although the papers were finally submitted, the name of the candidate did not make the list after scrutiny. "They have said that the Observer will come to verify. The Congress party has now demanded the BJP to immediately cease it's strangle of democracy."

To condemn this shocking incident, Congress leaders including Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi and Marigaon Congress President Veer Kumar were also present.
