BONGAIGAON: Dwipen Saud, a self-styled 'colonel' of United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I), is stated to have been killed in an encounter with Assam Police in Bongaigaon district of the Assam early today.
Acting on a tip-off, a police team launched a search operation for suspected militants at Besimari under Manikpur police station in the wee hours today.
The militants allegedly opened fire on the police team, to which the police personnel retaliated, reportedly leading to an exchange of fire that lasted for about an hour.
Confirming the development, Assam director general of police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta tweeted: "Police-Ulfa encounter at Besimari (Manikpur PS) in Bongaigaon district took place just some time back. ULFA (I) Commander Western Command, recently appointed to replace Drishti Rajkhowa, SS Col Dwipen Saud appears dead with bullet injury. He’s being taken to the hospital now."
On the other hand, Padum Rai, the gunman of the deceased has been apprehended with weapons.

With this, the police have claimed that they have foiled the banned outfit’s plans of kidnapping some high profile people in collaboration with other anti-India forces.
A search operation is under way to nab more militants of the outfit.
