Guwahati, August 30, 2019:

The National Federation for New States (NFNS), fronted by tribal leaders from across the nation, has urged the Government of India to look into the pending demands of forming new States in the country.

It reminded the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of its 2014 election commitment of taking policy decisions to resolve the formation of autonomous states permanently.

The National Federation for New States has reiterated the demand for the following states in India: Bodoland, Gorkhaland, Vidarbha, Tipraland, Kuki State, Bundelkhand, Purbanchal, and Karbi Anglong Autonomous States.

NFNS further stated that the government cannot have any excuse for not creating other new States that have been demanding separation from the existing ones as per the Bhubaneshwar Convention of 1996.

It has called upon the government to exercise the same political will and urgency as in the case of invoking powers under Article 370 (1) to bifurcate Jammu & Kashmir.

NFNS has stressed upon BJP’s majority in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha which can further aid in the creation of new States and Union Territories. It calls the current excuse of the requirement of procedural requirements ‘cumbersome’.

“The present exercise gives an impression to the common man that only if there is terrorism and violence, there is a compulsion to create New States and Union Territories,” stated NFNS.

It says that the government has sent a wrong signal and encouraged violence in parts where small States are being demanded. NFNS further said that it was well accepted fact that the basis for creating new States and Union Territories had been to help people to live with dignity, to protect their language, identity and culture and also to make their life happier and more fulfilling lives.

NFNS has urged the Government to initiate the process for creation of such other States in order to bring out better distribution of resources and opportunities and also for proper implementation of Article 14.

“It is the time to provide justice after 72 years of Independence to the people of these regions who has been deprived form many constitutional rights, inequitable governance and development” said NFNS.
