Two suspected poachers were gunned down by the Special Task Force (STF) and state police in Morigaon district of Assam in the wee hours today. The police team recovered one 303 rifle, live ammunition and floating tubes from their possession.
Speaking to InsideNe, Morigaon Superintendent of Police Swapnanil Barua said that the police party spotted two persons moving suspiciously at Chitalmari at around 1.20am. When asked to stop, they tried to flee. On being challenged, they opened fire at the patrol
party. The police retaliated and both of them were killed in the ensuing gunfight.
The identity of the deceased are yet to be ascertained. Police suspect that they were on a mission to kill rhinos either in Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary or Orang National Park.
