Udalguri Man commits suicide after receiving FT Notice

Guwahati, October 28, 2018:

Another suicide related to the National Register of Citizens (NRC) was reported on Sunday and this time it was reported from Udalguri.

According to reports, the person identified as Debnath Das committed suicide on Sunday after he received a notice by a Foreigners’ Tribunal (FT) to prove his citizenship.

The deceased’s family stated that he was asked to prove his citizenship by the FT and for this he was tensed over the past few days.

According to the family members, Das unable to figure out a solution to the issue committed suicide in the backyard of his house in Ghagra, Udalguri.

Raj Veer, SP, Udalguri said that the police were informed in the morning about the suicide but since there was no suicide note, it is yet to be clear why he exactly committed suicide.

“His family has made an allegation that the officials of the Udalguri Foreigners Tribunal demanded a bribe to settle the case,” Rajveer said, adding the matter will be probed after an FIR is registered in the case.

"Although his name was included in the complete draft of the NRC but after receiving the FT notice he got scared and was worried that he might be termed as a Bangladeshi", a local stated.

The deceased was a bicycle mechanic.
