The United Liberation Front of Assam-Pro Talks (ULFA-PT) faction is pressing the Centre to sign the peace accord with them before the upcoming Lok Sabha election.
General secretary of the organisation, Anup Chetia along with other members which included ULFA leaders Raju Baruah, Chitraban Hazarika and Shasha Choudhury expressed dissatisfaction over the slow process of the talks held a meeting with Centre’s interlocutor AB Mathur and senior officials of the Home Ministry.
Reportedly, the leaders of the ULFA-PT leaders were disappointed as the sign of the accord is being delayed even after the conclusion of the formal peace dialogue. They demanded the centre to sign the formal Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) before the Lok Sabha election.
Anup Chetia speaking on the issue said, “We do not want the centre to just sign the accord but rather we want the whole accord to be meaningful. During the meeting we discussed the charter of demands and the ongoing political issues of Assam.”
It may be mentioned that earlier, the ULFA-PT threatened stated that they will pull out from the peace talks if the Central government passes the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and give settlement to the Hindu Bangladeshis in Assam.
