In another setback to the armed insurgent group, a United Liberation Front of Asom, Independent (ULFA-I) cadre has surrendered at Maibela Army camp in Assam’s Sivasagar district on Sunday.
The surrendered cadre has been identified Rupam Das alias Padum Asom. He hails from Disangmukh in Sivasagar district. He surrendered along with his arms and ammunition.
As per sources, the cadre joined the banned militant outfit in 2010. The ULFA-I cadre has been handed him over to the Sivasagar police by the Army.
It is to be mentioned that in the past few months, many cadres of the rebel outfit have surrendered in different parts of the state after the Myanmar Army (Tatmadaw) began a crackdown against armed insurgents from the Northeast region.
The surrendered ULFA (I) cadres said that many cadres were leaving the neighboring country Myanmar ever since the Myanmar Army (officially known as ‘Tatmadaw’) started its crackdown against North-Eastern insurgent forces. Many ULFA (I) cadres are facing problems in recent times and hence, have been fleeing from their camps in the neighboring country, police said.
