A day after five people were killed by unidentified gunmen near the Dhola-Sadiya bridge in Upper Assam, the Sivasagar Police on Friday detained United Liberation Front of Assam (pro-talks) leader Jiten Dutta.
He was picked up by the police in Sivasagar district while he was travelling towards Upper Assam from Guwahati. When reports last came in, he was in the custody of the Gaurisagar Police Station.
The police said Dutta’s detention was for security reasons. Another ULFA (pro-talks) leader, Mrinal Hazarika, has been detained by the police in Guwahati.
Earlier, the police had sniffed the hand of the ULFA-Independent faction in the incident. However, the outfit in an e-mail statement denied its involvement.
