'Unlock' unlikely in Assam before June 15, says CM Biswa Sarma

GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that it is very unlikely that any noticeable relaxations will be given before June 15 in regards to the curbs that have been imposed to arrest the spread of COVID-19.

"On the 5th, we will inform you if we are in a position to re-look the situation. There might be some relaxations on June 7. However, I don't think there will be any noticeable unlock before June 15," he said.

Amid a surge in COVID-19 deaths in Assam, the state's chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that patients who die from post-COVID-19 complications are not counted as COVID-19 deaths.

However, children of people who die from post-COVID-19 complications could be included in the new scheme for children.

Although the COVID-19 situation in Assam has improved dramatically, the state government will only take a call on removing the restrictions if the positivity rate reduces further, he further opined.

Assam reported 5,436 fresh COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, informed the state government.

Now, the total case count in the state shot up to 3,98,010.

The northeastern state also saw 5,760 recoveries and 80 deaths in the last 24 hours, taking the overall tallies to 3,40,178 and 3,168 respectively. The current positivity rate in the state is 4.78 percent.

At present, Assam has as many as 53,317 active cases.

Biswa Sarma today said that the number of deaths could decline in the next 4-5 days amid signs that the second wave of the pandemic is nearing the end.
