BAKSA: The residents of Bengalipara Chariali yesterday raised a hue-and-cry over a persisting demand to ban alcoholic beverages at the Bogamati picnic spot that is seeing massive footfall amid peak season. The locals alleged that drinking and driving near the picnic spot has resulted in a series of accidents and deaths.

The protesters, who had blocked the Bangalipara-Bogamati road, demanded that the selling and consumption of alcoholic beverages at the popular picnic spot must be halted at once.

Various local organizations, such as "Aami Bhulajharia", fronted the protest against the consumption of alcoholic beverages. The locals, who also carried placards, chanted slogans such as "Stop alcoholic drinks in Bogamati", "Stop use of contraband drugs in Bogamati", et al.

Due to the road blockade, many would-be picnickers who were headed to the Bogamati picnic spot, had to turn back disappointed.

Amid the ruckus, Goreswar Circle Officer Junti Deka went to the protest site to placate the angry protesters. They were even handed 'written assurance' stating that alcohol would be banned in Bogamati, but they would simply not be placated. With the protesters continuing to raise a ruckus, Mohkuma Sub-divisional Officer (Civil) Bedanga Talukdar met them and assured them that alcohol would be banned and strict checking would be done on incoming vehicles.

Hearing this, the protesters finally gave way and allowed vehicles to pass -- much to the relief of the picnic-goers. "However, we will block the road again if these illegal dealings continue in Bogamati," threatened one of the protesters.

The authorities later conducted a search at the Bogamati picnic spot area, at the end of which alcoholic beverages were seized from at least 5 different shops in the area.
