GUWAHATI: The ally party of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam, the United People's Party, Liberal (UPPL) today released the list of candidates for the Gossaigaon and Tamulpur assembly constituencies by-elections scheduled for October 30.
By-polls will be held for a total of five constituencies–Gossaigaon, Tamulpur, Bhabanipur, Mariani, and Thowra.
While BJP fields candidates in the constituencies of Mariani, Bhabanipur, and Thowra, they have given its ally party UPPL to file candidates for Gossaingaon and Tamulpur.
According to UPPL working president Rwngwra Narzary, the party nominated Jiron Basumatary for Gossaigaon and Jolen Daimary for the Tamulpur constituency.
Jiron Basumatary is a member of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), an autonomous council for the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), while Daimary is a new face.

Narzary said the candidates were selected in consultation with State Chief Minister and BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma and state party president Bhabesh Kalita.
By-polls to Gossaigaon and Tamulpur constituencies were necessitated by the death of sitting MLAs Majendra Narzary and Leho Ram Boro respectively due to COVID-19.
Meanwhile, the by-elections for the vacant Majuli seat, which was left vacant for the AJP, have yet to be scheduled because its representative, Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal, resigned from the assembly hours after the Election Commission announced the poll schedule.
As Assam has a total number of 126 constituencies in the legislative assembly, if BJP crosses the magic number of 64 alone after this by-election then it will become the only dominating political party in the house and will be able to free themselves from the alliance, with UPPL and Asom Gana Parishad, if wanted.
