Urn, containing Vajpayee’s ashes, reaches Guwahati, to be immersed tomorrow

Guwahati (Assam), Aug 22, 2018:

An urn, containing the ashes of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, arrived in Guwahati on Wednesday afternoon for immersion in rivers including the Brahmaputra.

Upon arrival at the Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, the urn, which was handed over to BJP’s Assam state unit chief Ranjit Das by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, was taken to BJP Assam headquarters in Hengrabari area of the city in a procession.

Later, Das told reporters at the BJP Assam head office that the ashes would be kept in four urns. While one will be immersed in the Brahmaputra in Guwahati, the three others will be taken to Dhubri, Cachar and Dibrugarh for immersion.

“The ashes will be kept at the Karbi Tribal Yuva Sangha field in Guwahati tonight and taken to Sukreswar Ghat where people will pay their respect tomorrow. The remaining three urns will be sent to Barak, Dhubri and Dibrugarh at the same time tomorrow morning,” Das said.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said Vajpayee had done a lot for Assam. He had won the hearts of people from all walks of life in the country, the CM said.
