Vehicles Vandalized in Assam's Dibrugarh District During Muharram

Dibrugarh, September 11, 2019:

Dibrugarh district of Assam witnessed acts of vandalism during the holy celebration of the Islamic festival of Muharram on Wednesday.

During the peaceful processions known as Taziya carried out in the district to mourn the death Imam Hussain (grandson of Prophet Muhammad, as well a righteous Muslim leader) in the famous Battle of Karbala more than 1300 years back. However, some unidentified miscreants disrupted the proceedings by vandalizing a few vehicles that were parked near the streets.

The locals alleged that the miscreants carried sharp weapons and hit what came their way in the presence of the police personnel.

Speaking to Inside Northeast, Dibrugarh SP, Subashini Sankaran confirmed the incident, and said, “Specifically, three vehicles were vandalized during the Muharram celebrations. A case has been registered in this matter, and the concerned organizers are been contacted. An investigation is going on in relation to the case.”

Muḥarram is the first month of the Islamic calendar. The general meaning of the adjective Muharram means "banned, barred, forbidden, illegal, illicit, impermissible, prohibited, unlawful, unpermitted, unauthorized". It is one of the four sacred months of the year during which warfare is forbidden.
