Two wanted rhino poachers, namely Dilwar Hussain and Ganesh Doley, contested the panchayat elections in Assam. While Hussain, who fought on a Congress ticket, emerged victorious, Doley (AGP) was vanquished by his BJP rival.
Hussain, hailing from Suwaguri village in Assam's Biswanath district, won the polls by a margin of 240 votes. He was arrested in 2011 and again in 2012 for his alleged role in poaching.
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ripun Bora had earlier announced that Hussain's candidature had been rejected by the party.
Hussain maintained that he was an accused and not a convict. He added that it was a political conspiracy against him.
