"We are the President's Kin, We Should be in the NRC", Says Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed's Family, after Being Excluded from ListFakhruddin

Rangia, September 1, 2019:

In a shocking revelation, it has come to light that the descendants of Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed (1905-1977), the fifth President of India, have been excluded from the NRC.

Four members of the former President's family, residing in Rangia of Assam, have been excluded from the final list, which was published on Saturday.

A neighbor told the media, "The names of everyone in our village are there in the final NRC, but the names of Fakhruddin's family have not appeared. Everyone in the neighborhood is asking them why their names are not there in NRC, as their's is a highly-respected family. I request the Govt to include their names in the list without delay."

One of the family members said that Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed was her grandfather’s brother, and everyone is talking about them in the village. "They (the authorities) have called us on September 7. We will go and see what happens then", she added.

"His father has gone for fishing, they earn from their fish selling business. The younger son stays in Delhi. We are not there in the NRC, we should be there. We tried and submitted all the documents", she said.

Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed was the fifth President of India from 1974 to 1977 and also the 2nd President of India to die in office. He was the only President belonging from Gurjar Tribe.

His father, Col. Zalnur Ali Ahmed, was the first indigenous Assamese person and the first indigenous person from northeast India to have an M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) degree. Ahmed's grandfather, Khaliluddin Ali Ahmed, was from Kacharighat near Golaghat and hailed from a well-known indigenous Assamese Muslim family.

It may be mentioned he was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Barpeta constituency, in 1967, and again in 1971. In the Central Cabinet he was given important portfolios relating to Food and Agriculture, Co-operation, Education, Industrial Development and Company Laws.
