Guwahati, November 6, 2018:

Following the uproar in the state regarding the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator from Chabua, Binod Hazarika has threatened to resign from the party as well as a legislator if the bill is passed.

Speaking on the issue, Hazarika said that if the centre passes the controversial bill that might make the Assamese community a minority in their own state then he would quit resign as an MLA and also from the party.

He added that by no means Assam would take any more foreigners. No one who came after 1971 would be allowed to stay.

It may be mentioned that the bill would amend the Citizenship Act, 1955 which would make illegal migrants who are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, eligible for citizenship.

The Bill which would make illegal migrants eligible for citizenship on the basis of religion, may violate Article 14 of the Constitution which guarantees right to equality.
