A report filed by election watchdogs Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) has revealed that Congress candidate from Silchar, Susmita Dev, has one pending criminal case registered against her. Which begs the question: when will the Silchar MP 'advertise' the case in media as per the Election Commission's new directives?
The candidate, who will be contesting from Silchar on a Congress ticket, has one pending case registered against her in Silchar under section 15 of the Environment (Protection) Act 1986 and Municipal Solid Waste (Management & Handling) Rules, 2000. Case no. - C.R. No. 303/2010.
A Criminal Petition vide No. 46 of 2016 has been filed against the proceeding by the Silchar Municipal Board before the Gauhati High Court and the Court stayed the further proceeding of the above case by its order dated 10.10.2018.
While speaking to InsideNE, National Election Watch state coordinator and founder of North East social trust Tasaduk Ariful Hussain, said, “In spite of the Supreme Court’s order to set fast track courts to give judgment of the cases pending against these elected representatives, her case is not being settled. This is unfortunate and more such people are coming forward. This is a risk to the democracy and more muscle power is coming into the democracy.”
