Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) firebrand Akhil Gogoi on Wednesday warned the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) not to play with the future of Assam, adding that he is prepared to give his blood to stop the project if the Government goes through with it.
The statement came after the NHPC resumed its construction work of the 2000 MW Lower Subansiri Hydro Power Project on Tuesday. The construction of the power project was put on hold after massive protests by the people of Assam who claimed that the project poses a threat to the people living downstream and the aquatic life.
Akhil Gogoi added, “NHPC has announced yesterday that very soon, they will start the Lower Subansiri Hydro Power project, but we will never accept this. No Assamese will ever accept this project and it should be stopped immediately.”
“If NHPC does not stop this, we will be compelled to protest and stop the project. We’ve been demanding to stop its construction since the past because experts’ committee that was for to analyze its impact in the state said the project can collapse at any moment, Gogoi added.
He further alleged that the NHPC authorities have not yet taken any measure to prevent it and thus warned NHPC not to play with the future of Assam.
The KMSS firebrand further said that government had earlier announced that an experts’ committee will be formed for the project. Based on the committee’s reports, the project was supposed to be planned after a tripartite discussion with public, experts’ committee and government representatives. Akhil Gogoi also added that Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal must fulfill the promise.
